There are not many cinema screenings from France and this double bill of Tchaikovsky’s last opera and last ballet is only being shown live in very few cinemas on 17 March 2016. Use our Opera Near You widget to see if there is one close to you.

If there is not a convenient screening, you can catch it on Culturebox (FranceTV’s catch up service) from 19 March and then on France 3 at a later date, yet to be revealed.

The pairing may seem unusual – there is less crossover between opera and ballet audiences than one might assume – but, in fact, the premier of both pieces took place in a double bill at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg on 18 December 1892.

The role of Iolanta, the blind-from-birth princess, is taken by Sonya Yoncheva and Vaudémont, through whose love for Iolanta her blindness is cured, by Polish tenor Arnold Rutkowki.
